I'm glad everybody else was getting the porno shit as well...thought the computer was losing its marbles. I turned Jools' programme on just at the end of Paulo Nutini and was impressed/unsure if I've liked this kind of stuff before and will go off it just as quick. I've looked for his stuff but can't find any...is he even signed? Seems unlikely he would be on Jools' show without some kind of deal. |

youtube appears to have some tempting stuff on. I found a lot of other stuff besides JG related so i may spend some time perusing, thanks Robert. BigBimbo keeps asking the question we all need to find an answer to, How can we as fans or James as an artist find a way to make more people aware what we are making it easier for us all to get to gigs and such like without going so far as to push this into the hands of evil A&R bastards who I like to believe James would never sell out to but rather hear what he's got to say when he's free and easy (Am I dreaming that such a deadpan cynisist could ever be free and easy?) as opposed to when he's spent half his day convincing some suit from 'That London' That James Blunt is not a blue print to all artists. (although I have to admit I have listened to his album with my future with and he deos a special gift for making the silent gap between songs enjoyable.) Also we have to ask how far does James want or need to go to be happy, and do we have the right (if we crack the code of mass marketing) to thrust exposure upon James just so I can see him play in Liverpool with no eight hour coach journey, but then again no tossers turning up because there was a good review in Q. I dont know, I don't know..... |

When i was last in New york i had just missed "Tartan week" a celebration of all things scottish, arts ,culture, tourism,a bit like st patricks day only for jocks,it was about april time, dont know who bangs on doors for James but surely an opportunity to promote one of scotlands finest artists who is not shortbread and pleated skirt it is here,if not here there must be many more especially,Canada,Austrailia even the world!I dont know how James is fixed with regards to touring, promoting, himself, afterall, he is the jewel not the jewelery salesman |

Howizitgawnagain,Lets have a mrs Merton style debate, intimate v 5,000 plus all seated air conditioned house with an edumacated and respectful audience, whats good for you ? Being the only James Grant fan in the village is never easy, the Guiness is good non prescriptive medication but probabally provokes more questions than answers, the gig in Denholm is of course a very good thing and i hope to be there, but;,there always has to be a but,the last time i saw James play an intimate gig ie,not very many people turned up and those that did were a mixture of diehard fans and what appeared to be pasty faced students at a loose end who sauntered in out of the cold, talking when taking their seat halfway through a song, talking through the next song and leaving halfway through the next, had absolutely no bearing on the performance which of course was excellent, but i just felt a wee bit sad for James,he deserves so much better, maybe i think too much.I couldn't help but think where do i want to see James play next,Kelvingrove station or Madison square garden, where i have to chase ticket touts for the privilege of paying well over the odds for a ticket that allows me standing room only on a urine soaked carpet at the back of the hall, still thinking that one over.Just for the record i am not always a miserable negative sod,i enjoyed the Nadal / Federer French open final and i have been watching and loving every minute of the BBC coverage of the world cup,i hope i can resist the temptation of heading out there to experience the magic of Brazil, might even take my bagpipes,i even enjoyed the Paraguay game, but why were the crowd chanting "get Grace out,get Grace out?" Idea!,James grab a banjo and head for Germany, theres a whole lot of people out there just waiting to discover you. |

The Hallelujah Man CD Video is like a mini laserdisc - the audio tracks will play in a regular CD player but the video will only play in a laserdisc player. Some people get confused because Video CD plays in all DVD players where as CD video is a completely different format. |

....I think we're a wee bit torn here...we love the idea of seein JG at small intimate venues (eg stafford, cottiers)but want him to have the worldwide acclaim (aye I'm bein serious!) that he deserves but it would be at the expense of £50 a ticket shows at soulless aircraft hangars like NEC and others of that ilk. I too have the live version of aztec camera doin the live acoustic version of Jump....brilliant when roddy gets to "...I aint the worst that you've seen...." and someone shouts 'Aye ye ur ya b*stard!'....roddy gets his own back later on inthe song....priceless...'...why does it take the tears of a woman to see how men are...'munroe i got stung when i bought a vcd that won't play in pc or dvd player....now i go for dvd single formats....got a few belle and sebastian ones in that format cos they do vcd and dvd formats now they've gone from jeepster to rough trade. |

Quite right,we should be looking foward not back, and James Grant live is the way foward, but is there not anyone online with any connections in London,New York or Los Angeles,is James being touted as some pub turn,I know everyones intentions on this board are good, and the more people who see him live the more people will promote his work,I think i am a bit dilussional in thinking that to have what James has is enough, the ability to create and play the way he does but sure he has bills to pay like the rest of us,the respect he has with other performing artists not only in scotland but internationally makes me wonder is it not time people who have been influenced by James should be more forceful in there support of his current work, the bods at bbc scotland should be banging down his door asking him to perform for them, and like most good original ideas bbc london will come chaseing after,no offence intended to anyone in the support and promotion of James and his work but it just pisses me off to see James perform like some virtual karyoke. |

Seen Roddy Frame many years ago at the manchester appollo, when the stone roses were tipped to be the next big thing and the "madchester" scene was in full flow,Roddy appeared on stage wearing denim flares, honestly, flares, the gig was probabally very good but Roddys credability was severley questioned, dignity in the workplace and all that,a grown man in flares trying to connect with the yooth of the day, sad,i might be wrong maybe he's always worn flares, maybe still wearing them, anyway a good gig remembered for what he was wearing rather than what he was saying. Is it really a long way to tippererry, sureley it depends on where your coming from .Winter,i love that song. |

Never been a Blue Nile fan, but I spent my Friday evening watching Roddy Frame at The Shepherd's Bush Empire. He sounded fantastic and was superbly entertaining. Two hours of 'one man and a guitar' sounds was inspirational ... I went and bought some new strings on Saturday morning! He made reference to the fact that he and Paul Buchanan were playing in both in town "What are the chances of two of Scotland's laziest and shiftless poets playing in London on the same night?!" he asked) Shame to see the message board back. I was getting rather friendly with some of the "Ho's In Da Hood" |

Indeed, The Blue Nile are very much a "love 'em or hate 'em" band, no doubt about that. I found a very comfortable seat in the Circle and enjoyed the whole lot. It's sad they don't produce more material (and tour even less), but I guess it adds to the air of mystery. My next gig, Martyn Joseph, is proably as close to the complete 'one man and guitar' show as James Grant gets. You would enjoy it clive, melancholy and banter well up to James' standard. Have a quick listen at: http://www.martynjoseph.co.uk/ It's good stuff! |

Munroe, Front row seats straight in front of PB's microphone stand! It was like having them play in your living room. I was totally oblivious of the rest of the audience behind me. The poor bloke had to look at me every time he glanced down. Talk about suffering for your art! I thought it was absolutely superb as did my eldest son. Completed by a handshake at the end. Enjoyed it so much that I took my youngest son to see the London Barbican gig, which was just as good. (managed to get a pair of 2nd row tickets for a tenner each on Ebay!) I know not everyone 'gets' the Blue Nile, but personally, I can't wait for the next tour in 2016... |

I've been trying to control my alchohol intake as thus haven't been drunk or hung over enough to post lately but saturday is somthing else. I think the idea of subtley invading other web spaces is a good one and maybe posting links to this site and James' my space sight could be useful. If anyone finds somewhere to post a pro JG comment It could be useful to note it for others to go to the same space and place reaffirming responses along the lines of- 'I have been a fan of U2 since my early teens and Bono isn't as much of a twat as you may think. By the way has anyone heard of James Grant He is a modern day God and well worth a listen.'Billy In Manchester 'In response to Billy in Manchester I would like to say that Bono is in no way any part of a twat but is a total and utter Bell End! but you are right about James Grant everyone on this sight should visit his and buy some records right now.' from cooky in the south. It has got to be worth a go but if we post records of where we have linked here people will spot our ruse when they respond so maybe we should post that info on the yahoo group site. Another thing that could be worth a go is we keep poinlessly mentionong popular topics of the day so we pop up on google so In that vain I say to you Gorden Brown what is his affairs affect on Wayne Rooney's World cup hopes and Was Lehman sent off Because of his Knowledge of the Davinci Code and X-men 3. If anyone gets any details of the Cumnock show please post them asap as If James is on early enough It could be possible for me to travel up and back on the same day. It also appears that Karen Matherson may be on as well as the proclaimers, Maybe james is doubling up with hjis own set and an appearnce with karen. I fear I'll have to give the Edinburgh show a miss due to my work rosta and the cost of an overnight stay. |

My brother in law introduced me to Friends Again when Honey At The Core came out and I saw them at East Kilbride. It definitely is a great summer album and is far more than just an album of its time. I've a funny feeling however, that James will not look back kindly on it as he seems more focussed on the present day than the past. I hope Gretna don't win the UEFA cup as we'll be relying on it on the way out of the Champions League! Gretna will be a credit to Scotland no matter who they play because I'll tell you, they are not an easy team to break down. |

We jambos were just making the final more of a spectacle for the viewing public...or we were making a spectacle of ourselves (one of the two)!! After 20 years following Hearts I finally saw them lift a trophy (wasn't there in '98) and it almost makes it worthwhile. Best moment was the microsecond after their last penalty hit the bar and there was this weird silence when you can't believe you've won. Worst moment was Townsley kicking a totally wired Paul Hartley 60 seconds from the penalties knowing that his retaliation would get him sent off. He did us a favour because Paul would probably missed his as he was wired to the moon. On second thoughts, my new best moment was when Townsley missed his (piss poor)penalty. |

Was it Homer Simpson who wondered,"rock stars, how come they know everything?",Geldof,Africa solved,Bono, poverty solved, Sting, rainforest saved,Chris Martin, Indian drought no problem,Jonny Rotten, anarchy in the uk,Gary Glitter," do ya wanna be in my gang,my gang ".Do we as people who follow James Grants art, like the fact the he dosent have the popularity of the spice girls but some how feel suprior too teenage numptys who follow the latest trend, would we admire James's work if it was more commercially available, part of the joy of James work is the exclusivity,we know we are on to a good thing, and we dont want to share it with any one else, not good for James, but good for us,we can talk about music with our friends but if they dont know James Grant, they dont know good singer songwriters.Sometimes i fear James becoming huge,in case it spoils it for me,a totally selfish view i know but there's nothing better than sitting in a bar chatting to a stranger who knows the genius of James Grant. |

Iain, talk about suffering for ones art,Tina Turner at the SECC, missed that one(lived abroad for a while, was it late eighties?)Crowd transplant required methinks,SECC wouldn,t do it for me anytime, no matter who was on the bill. Prefer my venues on the smaller side,Apollo and the kings hall leeds were my fave big venues, with tiffanys valentinos mayfair, then nightmoves...slowly moving down to the paisley arts centre(best small venue i,ve been in). Any additions folks???? brooni... |

Don't know what happend there but a blank post is probalbly better than most of what I have to say. I just got hold of Monica Queens Return Of The Sacred Heart today and that and the Karen Matheson albums I've picked up since visiting this site have lead me to dust of the old Ruby Blue album 'Down From Above' another easy going 'Folky' band with a angel voiced front woman, In this case Rebecca pigeon. Rebecca is now based in America and pops out the odd album in between carving out an acting career. I can recomend anyone who gets the chance to have a go at any of her own stuff or the Ruby Blue albums give it ago.Gaz.A |

Munroe, Thanks for summing up what I've been trying to say so much more simply (and with more attention to spelling and keying.) and for calrity as my points often get confused when they leave my mind through my fingers and mouth I had no issue with you and your post's.Iain I remember some reports of L&M supporting TT at the SECC, but I have no Idea where I remeber this from possibly the L&M info service, deos anyone else remember that or is it a feature of one of my insane fantasies, I did get signed up to alot similar mailing services at the time. Broonie, To take the chance to re-plug one of my favourite memories I saw the band on the DITT preview tour at a small venue in Birmingham which was in itself a great little intimate theatre, but we were told in the pub on the corner of the block it also doubled up as a porno theatre. The pub we were in was like the one in An American Warewolf in Paris but there was no dart board just a table skittle game being played by to of winston Green finest (still in their prison issue clothes.), we hard halves not pint's. This was literally opposite New Street station and not in some obscure location so for a P&R dude in the city It probably sounded like a cosy central location for the midlands press. We waited by the stage door for the main part of the day partly to meet the band and talk to road crew (always and education,) partly to avoid being alone in A large and alien city and partly because every other building appeared to be involved in some sort of sex trade (Strip bars Porn Bars and possibly prostitution but as I was on the dole I didn't investigate.). Quite a different experience from Stirling. Gaz.A |

Broonie I seem to remember L&M supporting Tina Turner at the SECC. Despite the boys best efforts it was a truly dire experience in a pretty hopeless venue. It would be interesting to hear if anyone remembers this or if I am going a bit mad Iain |

parkhead on sunday was a bit less noisy than usual, keane was 'best in show' but best part of the day (as the fitba wasnt great) were the celtic and rangers fans unfurling huge banners against 'racism and sectarianism'. am not sure that i follow all the 'hoo-ha' about direction of james' music, as far as i am concerned whatever it is next it will get a good listening! |

OMG! Just arrived back on the list and I see I'm being flamed/troll'ed (take your pick). Well, other than life being too short, I'd like to make a couple of points: 1. This list is usually very good natured and friendly. Thanks to all the people who keep it that way. 2. My comments were not aimed at persuding Mr Grant to head off on a musical direction of my choosing (as if!!)- they were offering some idle chat while the list had gone a little quiet. A lot of us have heard some of James' new material, so we do have a base to speculate about where he is going next (BTW, have you noticed how no two James Grant/L&M albums have the same 'sound and feel' - his ability to produce something fresh everytime is a truly great quality. Coldplay, anyone?!?) 3. Finally, as to 'ownership' of Music. James has said on a few occasions that he is a great believer in writing lyrics which may mean different things to different people. I 'own' a different version of, say, Dogs In The Traffic to anyone else on this board. I have put meanings and feelings to lyrics which make them unique to me. It is MY record, and no-one elses. Thanks for allowing me a small counter-rant!! If anyone wants to continue this, please take it off the board and email me in private: munroe12345@hotmail.com |

No BigBimbo I Don't beleive that whay I or for the most part anyone puts on here will make much of diferrence and I don't think many people who post do, but It'd nice to know that people read what your saying (including James) and it's nice for people to feel heard. I spent a long time being the only James Grant fan I knew with the only news coming by spotting the albums appear on the HMV shelves and it wasn't nice. How do I think he got by without tinternumptys probably through being a brilliant song wtiter and talented musician and singer who would appear to work hard at his craft. I don't make any presumtions that he or anyone else who reads this needs it (or in most of what I post can get past the spelling mistakes or mis keys (or the nonsencesical bollocks I spout half the time anyway.)).But the space is here and I'm going you use it now and again whatever. I don't want to get real, Real is the forty four hour week I work in a dangerous violent enviroment so I can come home to live in a terrace in the gun capital of Liverpool that needs about twenty grand worth of building work but we all have real lives to face on a day to day. I prefer when it come to music to dream a little you know put on an album be taken away somwhere a little different for a while. Creative inspiration should not be sought but should be found I did not quite litrally mean that James or any artist when slightly stuck will go to their fan mail or internet sites and have a look for a goog idea I was making the point that it is important to a lot of people who don't have a creative outlet of their own to try to communicate with artists they admire in the belief it makes a difference to that artist. People still send fan mail to Elvis and John Lennon which lets face it make no difference to the two of them but is theraputic to sender. when I talk of inspiriation I don't believe I specified 'creative', I am insired all the time but so far my creative contribution to the world would fill a match box (and not in some modern or outsider arty farty way.) I tend to mean the general overall vibe of inspitration where by maybe anyone who visits here may read a comment and go away with a smile, or as this is an open forum a thrown and if now and again one of the tinternumptys who comes here can inspire a smile in James then maybe thats part payback for the places he takes us. Sorry for ranting on again nut thanks BigBimbo for giving me somthing to think about. |

No problem with people speculating about an artist's direction, the question is ,do "fans" think they can influence the artists direction, when james is searching for the last song for an album, do you really think he checks out the "fans"forum for creative inspiration, get real, how on earth did he manage all them years without the help of tinternumptys. |

Any of you guys into MySpace for checking out new sounds? You can hear some of James' music here: http://www.myspace.com/jamesgrant99 and here: http://www.myspace.com/verticalrecordsuk Don't know if you have any direct involvement in your page, James, but it's fantastic to see it there. I feel I 'own', I don't own James Grant, I don't own his creation or is his art but what I think and feel as a result of experienceing the art and any thimg it inspires in me is all mine. I do not feel that gives me the right to dictate what James should do but if there is a forum like this for people to discuss his work then I don't see the harm in people speculating or even hinting a little bit in the hope that they may inspire. If this forum has been set up for us all to come and have our say then it's obvious someone clearly deos give a monkeys what we think and the fact that we all read it (and it would appear James deos too) is further illustration of that point. I don't really care what comes next I just hope it is another step in the evoloution, but I can safley say if it is a throw back to any of his previous work I will be more than satisfied and I will 'own' all that it inspires in me. |

All gone a little quiet here... so, what direction do we think James will take on his next CD? Having heard some of the new stuff live, there should be no need for quality control, that's for sure. All sounds good to me.. However, much as I enjoyed Holy Love, I'd like to see the band back again, maybe with a 'clean' production sound a la Sawdust.... what do we all think?? |

i have, as jesse says, mainly listening in recent weeks to i shot the albatross. it is wonderfully refreshing, varied and interesting. indeed playing it on a sunny spring day is positively uplifting. i feel it would be great to hear more of that type of poetry and music, a good example is 'the poet and the piper' by seamus heaney. we went to see some burns places in dumfries last weekend and the kids thought him a fascinating man and subject. i agree with a posting about christy moore and declan sinnott, they work really well together. christy is a real genius at getting the best out of other folk's songs, and live he can be almost unrivalled for the effort and quality. sorry to see that henrik is injured and may miss the final, hope james had a 'non runner- no bet' agreement with ladbrokes. |

James, Although I was a fan of Love & Money I have kind of lost track of you as a solo artist. I bought "Sawdust In My Veins" but for some reason never seemed to get in to it the way that I did with L&M albums like "Littledeath" and "DITT". Having just discovered your website and listening to the songs in the download sections and the discography I can't believe what I have missed. I have now managed to get a hold of most of your solo stuff either on CD or through i-tunes although I can't get "I Shot The Albatross". You are more gifted now than ever but I have to admit that the version of "You're Not The Only One" on your website is magnificent. It's one of the only songs that still makes me emotional, even after all these years. Is it Monica Queen on backing vocals? Hope to make it to see you live soon, are there any shows planned? Iain |

Rory, I do remember the Valves - Dee Robot on vocals, Ronnie MacKinnon on guitar, Gordon Scott on bass......can't remember the drummer's name. Their first (and maybe only) single was "Robot Love"/For Adolfs Only" which came out on Bruce Findlay's (of Bruces Records shop fame in Edinburgh who went out to manage Simple Minds) Zoom label.......I used to have a copy but must have got lost, loaned out or nicked at some point over the years. 1977/78 I think. We had the pleasure of seeing James at the Tollbooth in Stirling at the end of March. A bonus was having Fraser Speirs accompany him, which was a joy - I never thought the "moothie" could sound so good! I've just recently received his "About Time!" CD and would thoroughly recommend it. It has Mr Grant singing on a couple of tracks and a fine version of "Will the Circle..." as the last track. £12 well spent. |

ok then, hartley and maloney joint, at least hartley is a celtic supporter. on the music front are there any more gigs lined up? is there any ex l&m session player hard enough up to go on the line up in never mind the buzzcocks?surely the people who go on that are off their trolley, and the stand ins ,i h ope, can only be well paid or else they are mad i take it that nobody remembers the valves, what about a non scots band misty in roots who were superb live and i remember seeing the higsons support them, charlie higson eventually realising that comedy and not music was his thing. |

The Player of the Year should/probably won't be, PAUL HARTLEY and not just for the semi-final (although that was the candles on the icing on the cake) but for his contribution throughout the whole season. The guy has been fantastic and if wee Polaris Maloney wins, why?....because he's had a better season than last year? Having said that, if Paul had signed for the Celts when he had the chance, he would be the front runner for the award, no questions asked or am I just being a paranoid jambo again.....(and relax...) |

the tolbooth gig gave us the impetus to take the kids up to stirling today, what a great place with history bursting out all over, the bannockburn heritage centre was awe inspiring, and not just for the kids. i am ashamed that i havnt taken them before. thinking of scotland, i liked the garage as a venue and the arches seems to be a grand setting. we exchanged views of scottish music and i had forgotten of the valves, an edinburgh punkish band with a couple of great singles. and finally, to the champions....the spoils.hail hail |

Sorry Stephen, couldn't resist and you have no doubt heard this before, but does being a Urology nurse make you a piss artist?!? :>) There should have been 2 spare seats at the Tollbooth last Friday because I didn't make it after a shitty flight back from Boston via Heathrow Thurs night/Fri morning with no sleep...............just didn't have the energy, sorry to say, so my mojo was flagging big time. Hail Hail to the Celts and Shaun Maloney for Player Of The Year. Strachan has also done a great job. Alistair |

Congrats to the Hoops by the way...at least we've got the cup final to look forward to, although if we lose to Gretna there's a fair chance I may be running away to a desert island and may not be heard from again for a considerable time. James was saying he was chuffed that he sold out the Tollbooth, but the last time he played there I turned up late on the night and was allocated one of the last two or three seats that night as well. Keep on keepin on James! Speaking as a Urology nurse I can feel your impending success in my water (not a nice image on reflection) |

Stephen, sorry mate but you missed a great gig. James was without his dobro which had affect on the set. We got the Scarecrow Song, Breakin The Law and My Fathers Coat as a taster of the next album. As I mentioned earlier half of Dogs In The Traffic (Winter, Looking For Angeline, Whiskey Dream, Papa Death, and Lips Like Ether.) Will the circle be unbroken was one of the encores. I'm getting patchy now the rest of the set but I think We got I Can't Stop Bleeding, No Chicane, Long John Brown And Little Mary Bell, Jacquelines Shows, I'll Comb The Tangles From Your Hair, and my current favourite Holy Love. There was almost certainly more but I was in another place and had listened to everything from Trapped and unwrapped to holy love on the way up and then again on the way home, so some stuff is quite hazy.
